Jeanette Rwigyema in trouble
Last updated : 22 Oct 2008, Kampala

Reliable sources have told Radio Katwe that Jeanette Rwigyema, the widow of the late Major General Fred Rwigyema the RPF war hero is in trouble in Rwanda.

Our source tells us that Mrs Rwigyema is currently being investigated by the Rwandan government. She has been told to report to the police almost every day in Kigali.

They say she is under such intense scrutiny, and she feels almost like under house arrest. Jeanette Rwigyema used to operate a Tour and Travel company until recently in partnership with Leah Karegyeya, the wife of the former intelligence chief Colonel Patrick Karegyeya. But the tour company was closed according to one source, "on the orders of President Paul Kagame".

Col. patrick Karegyeya fled through Uganda last year. Radio Katwe was the first one to report the story if you remember. His whereabouts remain unknown but we ocassionally hear someone claiming they saw him in South Africa or Tanzania trying to survive doing business.

The issue which the Kagame regime has with Mrs Rwigyema is that they believe according to their intelligence information that Madame Rwigyema is being used by powerful forces in a "neighbouring country" to plot against Kagame's government.

According to Rwandan intelligence, Madame Rwigyema received a lot of money from General Salim Saleh of Uganda to do business. The money, they think, is to be channeled to anti-Kagame forces in Rwanda. Radio Katwe has not seen evidence to support either side but such is the level of mutual suspicion between the two regimes.

Another source speculated that Mrs Rwigyema's current problems could be somehow connected to why the Rwandan Commissioner of Police, Mr Andrew Rwigamba was sacked and is under house arrest.

Rwigamba when he was Commissioner of Police tried to help Mrs Rwigyema get some income to make her independent and give her life some little dignity. So he awarded her some small contracts such as the one to provide services to the police like re-painting police barracks and minor repairs.

But we hear when Kagame heard of it, he sacked Andrew Rwigamba and had him put under hosue arrest.

Mrs Rwigyema's passport has been withheld by the Kigali government.

In a related story, the children of Patrick and Leah Karyegeya are in a very sorry condition. They used to go to school in South Africa from what we hear. But now the government of recently re-elected President Kagame will not allow them to travel outside the country.

So they are siting at home. Mrs Leah Karyegyeya too cannot travel outside Rwanda. That is the latest we have from our neighbour, beautiful Rwanda, where it is never too early to be afraid.
